History of Toyohashi

The remarkable history of the land now called Toyohashi has been thought to go back over 100,000 years. This has been brought into question based on the overwhelming evidence from the ancient periods.

Around the year 1505 Toyohashi was an important town in the Higashi Makino Region which was ruled by Kohaku Makino. Makino was the ruler of the Imahashi Castle and governed firmly over his land. This led to great battles over the territory which ultimately put an end to his ruling and introduced new rulers over the city.

Terumasa Ikeda took control of the city in 1590 and renamed the castle the Yoshida Castle. His primary goal was to develop the city as a large thriving castle town at which he was very successful. The family remained in power through many generations and was eventually taken over in the late 1800’s.

Toyohashi was devastated by WWII. Almost the entire city was burned to the ground leaving almost nothing to repair and plenty to completely rebuild. The government proudly stood tall in planning their new city and was very successful in pulling the city back together.
