History

The two founders of mintdesigns, Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi have worked together since 2001. Katsui attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City, followed by the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design while Yagi attended Doshisha University of Fine Arts before also attending the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

The two, after meeting in graduate school joined together with Yusuke Takeyama and started mintdesigns in July of 2001. Takeyama, who no longer works for mintdesigns had previously graduated from Bunka Fashion College and worked for a number of brands in both Paris and London.

After being founded, mintdesigns went on to win the 7th Moet et Chandon New Designers’ Award in 2005 and has been exporting internationally for some time. Most recently, mintdesigns has added a children’s line to its brand.

Clothing Style

The mintdesigns style is largely characterized as envisioning large, colorful prints with exquisite patterning as major elements in every piece. Additionally, lace and headgear will often find their way into many pieces and occasionally new styles in Tokyo street fashion, while not co-opted fully, will be used as inspiration for new pieces.
