Current revision

Universal Studios Japan is located in Osaka Japan and is one of three major Universal Studios theme parks in the world. The park, modeled after the Universal Studios Orlando park, contains many of the same attractions, drawing mainly Japanese tourists and those from nearby countries such as China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Currently, the majority shareholder in the theme park is Goldman Sachs. Opening on March 31, 2001, Universal Studios Japan drew 11 million guests in its first year, the fastest any park has ever accumulated that many visitors.

Recent Controversies

The selection of the site on which the park is located was the subject of some debate when the land was first bought because of the use of the land by Sumitomo Metal Industries who had later admitted to burying more than 700,000 tons of carcinogenic materials in the land without proper methods of disposal. Additional testing was conducted in 1998 after the land was purchased and was shown to contain huge amounts of damage in the area with high Chlorine levels, Lead, arsenic, mercury, and selenium spikes. The park went ahead with construction behind schedule but has been marred since with repeated complaints and attempts to close it down.
