Ueno Station was opened on July 28, 1883. The buildings originally built in the 19th century were destroyed during the [[Great Kanto Earthquake]] of 1923 and were subsequently rebuilt by Japanese Government Railways. In 1927, the precursor to [[Tokyo Metro]] created the first subway line in Japan between Ueno Station and [[Asakusa Station]]. &lt;br /&gt;
