New page

Tokyo Midtown (東京ミッドタウン) is a massive, 569,000 square meter development in the Minato District of Tokyo, Japan. The $3 billion project was started in 2004 and completed in March of 2007 on a 19.4 acre plot of land that had previously been occupied by the Japan Defense Agency in Roppongi. Located less than a kilometer from another massive multi-use development – Roppongi Hills – Tokyo Midtown features office space with the likes of Fujifilm, Xerox, Yahoo! Japan, and Cisco operating out of it. Residences, hotel space, retail locations, the tallest building in Tokyo, and the Suntory Museum of Art are also located in Tokyo Midtown.

Development
The development is home to many different locations and shopping opportunities, including the five floor Galleria, with more than 73,000 square meters of stores, and restaurants ranging from local delicacies to international outlets from Italy, France, and America.

Originally built by Mitsui Fudosan and a variety of partners, Tokyo Midtown’s design was overseen by Nikken Sekkei and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Other firms were brought in for various parts of the complex as well, including EDAW for the public park, Kengo Kuma for the Suntory Museum of Art, and CommArts for the Galleria.

In addition to museums and retail space, Tokyo Midtown is also home to Design Sight 21_21, gallery owned and created by Issey Miyake with architect Tadao Ando. Many parts of the 1700 square meter building are inspired by the designs of Miyake’s clothing, including the A-POC clothing line.

Buildings in Tokyo Midtown
Midtown Tower – The tallest building in the Tokyo Prefecture, Midtown Tower stands at 248 meters high and is fourth tallest in Japan behind the Landmark Tower in Yokohama, the World Trade Center Building in Osaka, and the Rinku Gate Tower Building in Izumisano.
