Cibo Matto can only be described as Japanese-American pop. Founded by Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori in 1994, this New York-based duo was probably more successful in the states than they were in Japan. Their first album, Viva! La Woman, contained tracks such as Apple, Birthday Cake, and Sugar Water. These titles' connection to food is on purpose, of course; the name of the band is an Italian phrase meaning "Crazy Food". In 1997, they were joined by Timo Ellis and Sean Lennon (son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono). Their albums and videos achieved moderate success, with their videos being played on MTV and singles being played on college radio stations and at clubs. The group disbanded in 2001 though each member has continued on in their musical careers. Miho Hatori, for example, went on to become the voice of Gorillaz's Noodle.
