Tsu is a city in Japan located in the Mie Prefecture. As reported in the most recent census performed in the city during the year 2006, there are approximately 292,628 people currently residing in the medium-sized city. The estimated area of the city is reported to be 710.81km. Compared to surrounding cities this is quite large.
Tsu City was just recently established as ten surrounding cities, villages, and wards came together to create what is now known as the New Tsu City. This special merge took place in 2006 increasing the population and improving its economy. Due to the vast amount of merging the city is currently working to combine its industries and create a better organized economy. At this time Tsu covers all industries from agriculture to industrial chemical plants.
Since the city is highly known the government has officially deemed it the capital of the prefecture. This decision was based more on the potential for a strong government rather than an already thriving city status. Many believe it will serve well as it is already showing signs of being a very strong location in the country.
The beginning of the documentation for Tsu City goes back to the Edo era when it was first established as a castle town. A popular shrine in this time brought in many tourists as well as passionate residents from all of Japan.
As with many cities of Japan, Tsu was devastated by the bombings of WWII. It is reported that over half the city was severely damaged by uncontrollable fires leaving many destroyed homes and businesses. While this was a hard time for the people of the city it did not stand in their way of building an ideal city.
The city of Tsu was officially established in January of 2006. This makes Tsu one of the newest official cities of Japan. The procedure of being established included the enforcement of a proper government and mayor.
While there are few points of interest in the city of Tsu the location is quite convenient to the many historical sites throughout the Mie Prefecture. Museums, art galleries, temples, shrines; you can find almost any category of attractions in the area.
The officials of the city Tsu are working hard to put more efforts into drawing tourists into the city. This has shown in the vast amount of work done to present greener, more luscious gardens and parks. Their thoughts of the city are high and they look forward to taking the cities popularity status much higher in the near future.
