Miyagawa became known as one of the greatest cinematographers to come out of Japan. He became known for his work on the famous movie Rashomon, and worked three times with one of Japan’s most well-known filmmakers: Akira Kurosawa.
Miyamoto was born in Japan in the Yamaguchi Prefecture and attended Tokyo Imperial University. He joined the Japanese Communist Party in 1931 and was arrested in 1933 by the Japanese military police. He went to prison for twelve years, only being released after the end of World War II by a decree from Emperor Hirihito. He got back into politics and ended up leading the Japanese Communist Party.
