The Miss Japan Pageant (ミス日本コンテスト) is a beauty pageant to crown “Miss Japan.” It is sometimes referred to as the “Miss Japan Contest” as well as the “Miss Nippon Contest” (the Japanese translates phonetically to “Misu Nippon Kontesuto”) however it is not the same as “Miss Universe Japan” which is an entirely different contest altogether.

The Miss Japan Pageant was introduced in 1950, and the winner was Fujiko Yamamoto. It was quickly suspended before its sophomore year, but reemerged in 1967 and has been an annual beauty showcase ever since.
While there is only one “Miss Japan” winner, there are 5 official “Crownings” (or awards) in the Miss Japan Pageant. There are:
Several past winners of awards at the Miss Japan Pageant have gone on to become famous in their respective fields. Akiko Arai (1987) became an actress and a singer. Keiko Ibi (Miss Japan 1987) won an Oscar for her short documentary “The Personals” in 1999. Mami Nakamura (1986) became a Japanese painter and picture book writer. Several others became models and actresses.
On January 28th, 2008, the Miss Japan Pageant took place. The Winners were as follows:
