Japanese Mobile Phone Companies are some of the most important industries in Japan, we cell phones and cell phone technology is extremely popular across all of Japan, especially in Tokyo.

Overview

Japan is one of the leading creators in mobile phone technology. Year after year they lead the way in the creation of various technological features, including cameras, internet, GPS and music capabilities. As such, the mobile phone industry is highly competitive, aiming to provide the service that these cell phones require. There are three major mobile phone companies in Japan:

NTT Docomo

NTT Docomo (株式会社エヌ・ティ・ティ・ドコモ) is the leading Japanese phone company. Founded in 1991, it currently has over 50 million customers, annual revenue of over 4.5 billion yen, and an over 50% market share. They have also recently made a deal with Google that will allow YouTube videos to stream on their phones that will also promise that Docomo is likely to remain one of the leading providers of cell phone services.

In addition, their mascot (Docomodake – A Giant Mushroom) is a national icon features in its own video game and several manga.

au by KDDI

au by KDDI (KDDI株式会社) is the cell phone department owned by KDDI corporation. It is the second largest cell phone provider in Japan with 20% of the market share at approximately 18 million customers.

Softbank

Formerly Vodaphone and JPhone, Softbank (ソフトバンク株式会社) is not exclusively a cell phone industry, as it also owns several shares of various media organizations and Internet websites (Yahoo, E-Trade). It is the 3rd largest sell phone provider in Japan, but it is currently working with Apple to market the iPhone inside of Japan, which is expected to increase its revenue substantially.

Softbank also owns a Japanese broadband company (Cable & Wireless IDC), cable company (BB-Serve) and Gaming company (GungHo Online Entertainment)
