Newtype is a manga magazine that is published once a month. It began in Japan, and was first published in 1985 by Kadokawa Shoten. There is both a Japanese version, a version released in the United States, which is called Newtype USA, and a version published in Korea. The magazine is released on the 10th of every month, and focuses on anime and manga.
There are several columns that appear in the magazine monthly. Each of these contributors has something to do with manga or anime, and most are considered to be leaders in their fields. Some of the contributors have included: Satsuki Igarashi of CLAMP, the first all-female group of manga artists, and Mahiro Maeda. The United States version includes columns about the history of anime, which is perfect for the fan just starting to get into the genre.
There are always manga included in Newtype. These are usually in the center of the magazine, and are published regularly as a story. After the story has run its course, it can usually be published in book form by the same publisher. Some of the popular mangas that have graced the inside of Newtype include: The Five Star Stories, Chrono Crusade, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Full Metal Panic!. Not only is Newtype famous for manga, they are also known for serializing light novels. Some of these novels include: For the Barrel, and Gaia Gear.
Newtype makes watching manga easy by including a television schedule of the anime that is set to run in Japan within the month. The television section also has the synopsis for each episode, as well as the ratings for each show, direct from the network. At the present, the Newtype USA version does not have the US airdates for manga.
The magazine also makes it easy for manga enthusiasts to try their hand at drawing manga by giving tips for aspiring authors on how to work with computer programs. These tip columns are all written by illustrators who are known in their field, and who have a good amount of experience with the programs, which are often Corel Painter or Adobe Photoshop.
