Tokyo Guest Houses are short term residencies in Japan. Sometimes referred to as “Gaijin (Foreigner) Houses” they often resemble apartments because they are furnished and somewhat small, but they are less expensive than hotels and more comfortable than many of the available hostels.

About

Tokyo guest houses are not apartments or hotels per se. Many areas are shared, including the kitchen, bathroom, living room and so on. Each individual staying at a guest house is given their own room, though like most actual houses and apartments in Japan these rooms are often very small and compact, which is what justifies its more inexpensive pricing.

Guest houses most clearly resemble the idea of an American bed and breakfast. The purpose of the guest houses is not only to provide a place to live, but also to help socialize. As such, the public areas are meant for people to meet and spend time together. The wait staff is more casually dressed and the atmosphere is meant to be more comfortable for a relaxing stay in Japan. Prices can vary considerably depending on the area of the guest house, the size of the room, the number of occupants and the service.
