Tomakomai is a city in Japan located in the Hokkaido Prefecture. According to numbers reported in 2003 the approximate population of the city is 171,749 people residing in the 561km area. The climate of the area is said to be quite mild, although situated in one of the coldest prefectures. Cold winters and cool summers make for a perfect gardening location clearly seen by viewing the city.

An important port called the Tomakomai Port is located in the city and has been prioritized as the main industry. Distribution of many goods, including military equipment for the Japanese Military, is done using the popular port. In fact, the Tomakomai Port has been recognized as the largest manmade Port in Japan.

In addition to distribution the city is also home to many thriving companies located in the industrial zone. A large industrial base, said to be one of the largest in Japan, is where hundreds of companies producing metal, copper, and even oil refinement services now work to improve the name, therefore the economy, of the city.

History of Tomakomai

Tomakomai was first inherited by a group of rulers wishing to govern the area from this location in the 1800’s. It was at this time that plans for a large empire city began. The execution of this plan went well until finally coming to an abrupt end in the late 1800’s.

The early 1900’s were filled with many challenges facing the city. World War II and a weak economy threatened the entire existence of the city. Plans for a port were eventually placed on the table in the 1950’s.

In 1963, the Tomakomai Port was constructed and opened. At this time it was the largest port to ever be opened and thought to be the most important in all of Japan. The port is a symbol of faith as it was essentially what placed the city back on solid ground.
