Hentai

Hentai (変態 or へんたい or ヘンタイ) is a term generally used to describe pornographic animation, particularly pornographic Japanese anime. It owns a very large portion of the Japanese adult movie industry, though it has a not insignificant amount of the western world pornographic market share as well.

Hentai Definition

While the word Hentai is used in place of animated pornography, the word does not actually refer to the adult form of video. It is most often used negatively to denote someone as a sexually perverted. Japanese trains, for example, have a history of inappropriate touching in packed cars, and women who have been victims often scream “Hentai” at the individual to publically call them a "pervert." The term also means “metamorphosis” or “abnormality” but these days it is generally used negatively.

In general, however, the Japanese do not have a word for animated pornography, and often simply refer to Hentai movies as “jū hachi kin” which is the shortened Japanese way of saying “prohibited for sale to persons under 18.” The word “ecchi” (which is the Japanese spelling of the English word “H”) is most often used to refer to any adult videos. After Americans started using the word Hentai, the Japanese took the first letter “H” and used it to defer to any type of adult versions of movies. For example, “H Anime” is a common way of referring to Hentai, as in “Adult Anime” while “H Movies” would refer to adult videos, even those starring live people. The Japanese also use the letters “AV” which is an acronym for the English “Adult Video.”

How “Hentai” became the term for animated pornography in the western world is generally unknown, but many believe it may be a combination of the Internet and the incorrect usage of the word “Hentai.”

Adult Animated Videos

Hentai, or adult animated videos, are typically extremely pornographic in nature, often performing sexual acts that cannot actually be caught on film. Hentai movies will contain “tentacle pornography” (the simultaneous use of tentacles in multiple orifices by an alien or sea creature), scenes of rape, necrophilia, incest, bestiality or pedophilia. Sexual acts can include heterosexual pornography, lesbian pornography (known as “Yuri”) or gay pornography (known as “Yaoi”).

Hentai often stars famous cartoon or anime characters from non-pornographic medium, as a way of sexualizing characters that viewers of the original movies or books may have developed some type of romantic feeling for.

The animation comes in a variety of formats, including book form, traditional anime and 3d animation.

Characters in Animation and Criticism

The Characters in Hentai films receive a great deal of criticism due to their incorrectly proportion bosom and genitalia and their depiction of women and men enjoying various sexual acts that are meant to be brutal. However, these videos continue to be released regularly and are constantly advertised one the Internet.
