Salu was born in October of 1980 in Kohoku Ward, Yokohama City, Japan. She first became known to the country when she played Lily Chou Chou in a movie called All About Lily Chou-Chou. Interestingly enough, Salyu was not actually in the movie, but she was the voice of Lily which moves the movie along. Due to her spot as Lily, she quickly became a singer.

In 2003 her song, Wound That Heals, was used by Quentin Tarantino in his popular Kill Bill movie. The song is used when the main character is in Okinawa and is looking at Samurai swords. This helped to make Salyu’s name become known outside of Japan. She then went on to win the Best New Artist video in 2005 at the Japanese video music awards. Salyu is as mysterious as her ethereal singing proposes that she is. Not much is known about her past, the only thing that is currently known, other than her birth date and place of birth, is that she was born with the name Ayako.
