Aomori Prefecture was consolidated from previous provinces in 1871 during the Meiji Restoration and its capital was established in 1889. The town of Aomori was later consolidated as a city in 1898.
The region of Aomori Prefecture is in the northern corner of Honshu, facing Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait. Bordering Aomori are Akita Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture to the south. Aomori is best known for its numerous outdoor attractions, including world famous apple orchards, Lake Towada, and Oirase River. Mount Osore, is also located here on the Shimokita Peninsula.
