Oh My Goddess! (a! Megami-sama) is a manga written by Kosuke Fijishima. It began in a monthly magazine called Afternoon in 1988. The series has morphed from a manga into an anime and has become extremely popular. Kōsuke Fujishima has become well known simply for Oh My Goddess!, even though he has written other manga’s. It is because of Oh My Goddess! That Fijishima has become a household name. The manga was turned into an anime series in 1993.

College freshman Keiichi Morisato has an extremely pure heart. Because of his pure heart he has been chosen by Heaven’s computer system to receive one wish. In order to tell him of his options, the goddess, Belldandy, comes to Earth. She is very beautiful and is often referred to as angelic. Belldandy explains that he can do whatever he’d like and Keiichi believes that the entire thing is just one big joke on him. Belldandy talks with him for awhile and Keiichi comes to feel like Belldandy is the first person who has understood and appreciated him. He jokes that he wishes that she could stay with him forever. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), Belldandy is forced to grant him his wish and tells him that she will stay with him for forever. The rest of the series follows along with the mishaps that occur between Keiichi, Belldandy, Keiichi’s classmates and Belldandy’s mischevious sisters.

  • Keiichi Morisato – Keiichi is a very nice 21 year old college student. He’s extremely intelligent when it comes to mechanical things and tries to be nice to everyone. He is currently enrolled at the Nekomi Institute of Technology. Once Belldandy comes to live with him, Keiichi seems to come out of his shell. He does love Belldandy, but has a hard time showing her how much he cares.
  • Belldandy – Belldandy is a very kind goddess. Similarly to Keiichi, she cares for everyone. She is also a highly skilled goddess and actually has to wear a magical earring in order to keep her powers harnessed. She can teleport, go through mirrors and speak with animals. She is an excellent cook as well. She loves Keiichi and it becomes obvious when, in one of the later mangas, it is revealed that she could have canceled out the contract any time she so chose. Belldandy explains that Keiichi is special to her, and that she would not leave him.
  • Urd – Urd is Belldandy’s older sister. She tends to be a bit overzealous and has been demoted down to Goddess second class, because of her habit of lying. Unlike Belldandy, she only wants her powers to keep her sisters safe, not all mortals. She believes herself to be the goddess of love but winds up getting banished from Heaven due to her attempts at matchmaking Keiichi. She winds up living with Belldandy and Keiichi.
  • Skuld – Skuld is Belldandy’s younger sister. She has the ability to fix things, similar to Keiichi’s desire to fix things, and is a sweet young girl. She goes down to Earth and tries to convince Belldandy to come home with her, but decides to stay and live with them as a type of chaperone once she realizes that Belldandy is going nowhere.
